Week 1B

ABRAHAMIC REUNION & ZAHIR

Cancelled:
Dear friends we unfortunately have to cancel the Program 1B this summer. We received very few registrations so far and there is a schedule conflict for one of the main presenters. Nawal will come the following week, see week 2

Dear friends,
this morning I received the sad news that Sheikh Abdul Aziz passed away on Monday 31.5., apparently he had a heart attack last week and was in the hospital. I remember fondly this wonderful man, with his smile, his grace and his humour, as many of you will do who met him at the camp or at his house in Jerusalem.

My heart goes out to his family especially little Dania his daughter, she just turned 10 the day we left Jerusalem. He was the only one earning money and I wonder how his wife and daughter will manage.
I would like to establish a fund to send to them, so that at least for the short term they will be financially ok, until they can sort things out. Jerusalem especially for Muslims is a very difficult place to live in. It must be a great shock for them.

If you feel as moved as Alima and I and you are interested in contributing, please let me know at zahir@zenithinstitute.com and I will send you details on how we can do this.

With deep sadness Zahir

Zenith Institute is very honored to share again with you the following program lead by friends from the Middle East, this time joined by Nawal, a musician born in Africa who grew up in France. All of us danced to her music last summer.

This workshop is about peace, not political peace, but the peace that is rooted in our day to day relationships and interactions. This week will not be a week of lectures, but a time of interaction, of shared experience and above all shared appreciation for our differences and the life that we have in common.

This program will be a continuation of last years Peacemakers experience, which was a first at the camp and it will expand to focus on Peace in many different forms: politically, social, religious and individual.

We live in a global age. We are connected on many different levels – we are one planet, one human race with a growing global consciousness and what do we do with it?

How do we encounter each other across the dividing lines?
How do we embody our common heritage?
How do we make peace with each other and ourselves?

There are many unsolved conflicts and unhealed wounds between religions, races and people, in our social surroundings, in our families, in our own hearts. How can we train our hearts and our minds to become a vessel for understanding and reconciliation?

How can we heal those wounded parts of ourselves and in the world and go the Way of Peace?

This Workshop is about joyful experiences, meeting and sharing on the way of peace.

We will encounter the processes used by the Peacemakers working with the various communities in the Middle East, the music and experiences of Nawal, with her heritage deeply rooted in Sufi tradition and formed both in Africa and Europe, Zahir as a European and his long experience working with Pir Vilayat, Pir Zia and the community of Zenith Camp and Deepa with her in depth experience in facilitating programs and workshops around equal opportunities and diversity issues, and being an advocate for young people and all those struggling to have a voice in the world.

Nawal

Nawal, child of the world, daughter of the earth… Nawal originally comes from the Comoros Islands, also known as the “Perfume Islands” or “Islands of the Moon,” located in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa. Born into a family with many musicians, Nawal bathed in both popular and spiritual music from a young age, in her native islands and also in her new home in France. As a Muslim-born African woman who does not always adhere to traditional socio-religious codes, Nawal has faced many challenges in her career, yet she remains strong in her message and philosophy. Descending from the grand Sufi marabout of Comoros, El-Maarouf (1852-1904), Nawal invariably stays with the light of Islam founded upon love, respect and peace. In her music, she sings in favor of all humans, for education and for union. Nawal has gained international praise as a self-produced artist with her powerful voice and socially progressive commentary. Nawal has performed professionally for 20 years, and as a multi-instrumentalist she plays the gambusi (Comoran banjo-like instrument, cousin to the oud), the daf (Iranian frame drum), and guitar, among others.
