In the Sufi Tradition, spiritual practice offers us a path through which to experience the vast scope of our being as well as our participation in the underlying unity of all life. All of creation is considered to be a manifestation of the divine, and suffering is often understood to be a state of feeling separate from the underlying unity of life.
From the formation of galaxies to the pulsing cells of the human body, all life forms share the fundamental movement motif of spiraling fluid systems. Made primarily of water, our bodies are liquid crystalline structures designed to receive, carry and transmit vibration. When we offer our attention to the slower rhythms of the body, we begin to experience through sensation that our bodies are in constant rapport and interaction with all other fluid bodies in the universe far beyond what we commonly consider to be the physical boundary of the body. We begin to experience the vast reach of the body and our tangible ever-present connection to all of life, as well as the profound renewal and nourishment that comes from this awareness.
In this workshop, we will integrate a somatic practice called Continuum Movement with the perspectives and practices of the Sufi tradition. Continuum Movement offers a way of attending the nature of the body in movement. The body is understood as an unfolding process of movement rather than a fixed form. Breath and sound practices will be used to initiate movement explorations as we explore different ways of perceiving, sensing, and attending to life through the body. Moving individually and communally, we will explore a dynamic range of movement from the expressions of dance and improvisation to the contemplative interior explorations of the deep stillness that resides in all movement.
